{"id":735,"date":"2013-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T20:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cushla.spooky-possum.org\/wordpress\/?p=735"},"modified":"2025-01-01T13:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-01T00:29:17","slug":"the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cushla.spooky-possum.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2013\/01\/01\/the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"The City"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Stella Gemmell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><em>Random House<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Otago Daily Times, 2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After many years as her late husband\u2019s editor (and occasional co-writer), <em>The City<\/em> marks Stella Gemmell\u2019s debut as a stand-alone author and worthy successor to the family name.\u00a0 A sword and sorcery epic with a strong emphasis on the sword, it introduces us to a complex and vividly described world centred around the eponymous City.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"> Once a hub of culture and learning, the City is now consumed by corruption both physically and spiritually; crumbling from within as its sewers fail and slowly flood its oldest levels, and without as it wages incessant war on its neighbours.\u00a0 The plot involves a disparate group of individuals from both sides who are attempting to overthrow the Emperor and end the war, but an equal amount of time is given to describing the city and its inhabitants, from the poorest sewer dweller to the palace elite.\u00a0 And then there are the battles, in profusion and graphic detail.
