Their bond remains as strong as ever, politics regardless, until an unexpected reunion sparks an argument in which they discover the dark side of friendship: that those who know us most intimately also know \u2013 or assume to know \u2013 truths we don\u2019t want to admit to ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The emotional intensity of the first half of the story, which reminded me of <em>My Brilliant Friend, <\/em>overshadows the second, in which British deportation policy takes centre stage. &nbsp;But this imbalance is mitigated by Zahra and Maryam\u2019s climactic confrontation, and the novel ends with the recognition that a true friend will <em>\u201c[despite knowing your every flaw]\u2026choose to stand with you and by you through everything\u201d<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/entertainment\/books\/best-friends\">https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/entertainment\/books\/best-friends<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kamilah Shamsie Bloomsbury Otago Daily Times, February 21st 2023 Kamilah Shamsie\u2019s powerful eighth novel is, as the title suggests, the portrait of female friendship.
